It is the firemen who are getting the women hot and bothered at the renowned bachelor fire station and Melissa wants no part of it.
Melissa MacGuire is a news producer. She loves her job and her grandmother. This is a grandmother who wants her granddaughter to settle down and marry if only she could find the right man for her Melissa. And Nelly thinks she has at the Bachelor auction. Melissa had moved back to be with her grandmother after a disastrous love affair and to lick her wounds. Melissa also has an issue with her father who she considers a drunk and unsupportive but is able to change her mind when she sees the changes in him.
Harry Brody is the captain at the San Gabriel Fire Station. He is the best and all fire fighters want to be in his station. He is at the auction and runs into Melissa. Nelly, Melissa’s grandmother, paid for Ryan to date Melissa but he cries sick when he finds that he cannot date the 80 year old. Brody takes his place and ends up on a date with Melissa. Melissa is impressed with Brody and that he was taking the time to consider what an 80 year old might like to do on a date. Brody is also impressed with Melissa. Brody also has an ex-wife who he wants to avoid but she re-appears at a most inconvenient time and Brody must try and reconcile her with her current beau before she creates too much chaos with Melissa.
There is also another character who provides chaos in the story and it a very ambitious woman in the newsroom who tries all she can to disrupt and disturb to get what she wants – an anchor job in the big city. She is prepared to do whatever it takes for this to happen and she provides many of the elements for the misunderstandings between Brody and Melissa.
There is a large section of the story that Melissa and Brody are not together and this is a little off putting but the ending shows that Brody is willing to show Melissa his support when she needs it (and especially when she doesn’t realize that she needs him). This seems to have provided the author with the opportunity to set the stage further misunderstandings but would have preferred to have the pair have more time together to show the conflict rather than the fleeting sights of each other.
I did enjoy this story. It had the romance and humor. Although in the sections that the couple were apart obviously did not provide the humor but were really the serious side of the relationship.
